I find Altaro VM Backup to be very reliable and we have never experienced any issues restoring backups. The software works as good as close competitors that charge double the price.

Would be good to have an option to backup directly to the cloud instead of an on-Prem server. Other than that, works great for our business needs.

Yorumlar: My overal experience with this Software is Positive. No negative feelings and we have it running at a lot of our customers, most installations just run, notifications keep coming in, and backups are made. We sometimes test it , and every time the backup can be restored. Not losing sleep over this.

It used to be that the backups were easily accessible, vhd files in a subfolder, nowadays it's more complex, I guess because of regulations/ security. I liked how it was before, that way I could even use the backed up VHD as any VHD. Most of the functionality is now already in Altaro, so there is less need for it. But would have been nice to have. But to be honest I don't miss it.

Yorumlar: to get to the most actual issue: when your backup reaches a certain point and gets too big altaro becomes almost useless. they told me there is no way to improve this situation. when the backup gets too large and you need to do it daily the health check cannot finnish within 24 hours and starts all over again instead of continuing or something. I think i will give Iperius or Uranium a try. This is unbearable. "we are working on version 9 - that one is going to be better" ...
well yes , maybe... but since that one I will have to pay another 1000€ or something like the last time, it is just infuriating... not having a system work anywhere close to fine. Very high maintanence software. needy.

I cannot belive how SLOW this thing is. It has been a fight for years to make it run at some acceptable speeds. Painfully SLOW! no matter how good the harware is. It does not use the RAM/CPU/HARDDrives/NETWORK etc. fully. And noone can tell me why. I guess they have some crappy programming that throttels the threads or something. For example: it can do , when it works properly, a backup of like 10VMs with 3-4TB in like half a day. But it cannot finish a health check of the backup in less then 24 hours or resume the next day where it stopped. It starts all over again and never finishes. The drives have a RAID 10 Array and can do 500MB/S. yet the check barely challanges the drives. and then there is the issue with updates: half time I had to do a version update whithin the same big release, I had issues like: the backup got corrupted, or the settings got lost or similar. With help from the support team we could then solve some of the issues but then here we have the next problem: you have to renew the license to have access to support. which is fine BUT - when you renew after your old support has expired, you pay not from the day you buy support but rather from the day your old support expired -> RIPOFF! in my oppinion - they mess up the software with some small update inbetween and then you have to pay to resolve it. - one issue we solved ourselves and found out months later: your RAM on the Server NEEDS to be in DUAL CHANNEL or else Altaro will behave like absolute crap.

Altaro - Reliable and great suppot

Yorumlar: Altaro is a very reliable backup solution. If and when we have required support, the webchat function within the software is fantastic and the support guys are incredibly helpful

What I like most, is the wizard driven selections. Setting it up is super easy because of this. Even if you haven't used Altaro before, you will be up and running in no time.

we have fund previously that if a new version of Altaro is released, it creates a new folder for backups, which takes up more room on the media, as it keeps the previous backups as well as the new.

I like that it runs my backups nightly and only notifies me when there has been an issue.

For a novice with virtual machines like myself, it can be a bit overwhelming initially. I know it is designed with people with far more expertise than myself in mind.

VM Backup a five stars backup program

Yorumlar: It's a very good choice, at a very competitive price. Easy to use, works well, interface simple and clean.

VM Backup allows you to backup you virtual machines in the possible easiest way. Just install the program on a windows server (not client) and follow the instructions, you will set VM backup very quickly. First add the node(s) which contains the VM, then add the backup storages. With a simple drag and drop you configure the VM to backup and their destinations. Then you set the time and I suggest also to configure a daily report via email. Restoring a backup is a very easy task, you can also choose from restoring it in a sandbox instead of the production environment. I use VM Backup with VMWare and HyperV environments, no problems at all. Support is excellent (via email or chat).

It did what it was supposed to and backed our servers up to our chosen media each night. Once it was setup, the backups ran very consistently, with little need for adjustment or error correction. We had very few failed backups.

Configuration is missing a lot of granular options, making it harder to do things you may want to do with your backups. Configuring backups can be a pain due to this oversimplification.

Fantastic product for the Price

Yorumlar: Altaro has been very easy to use and I have been able to successfully restore full running VM's when needed so I am a big believer in the product.

What I like most about Altaro is the new ability to backup direct to Azure Cloud Storage accounts. This has been a game changer for us in our DR plan. It allows us to feel comfortable that we have local and cloud versions of our backups. That is a killer feature at the Altaro Price point.

Eksileri:

The only con I have is that we have had some occasional issues when using large USB devices for local backup. They seem to produce alot more errors with Altaro that with previously used products. Usually a reformat of the drive and the system seems to function well with it again. Just something we keep an eye on.

For high complex Systems its not the best suited since it does not has the most options. Deleting/purging older backups is painstaiking slow and needs to be improved.

Pretty good backup product with nice user-friendly GUI

Yorumlar: I do enjoy the product and wish it had a proper DR model. What I mean by that is, the means to bring up or restore an environment is a very timely fashion on multiple segmented networks if necessary. This is Disaster Recovery and seems to be a problem for Altaro to figure out.
As a side note, offsite backup locations can be LAN, Cloud but not tape media should ppl be using older LTO drives.

It is relatively easy to restore my Hyper-V servers, granular recovery takes some time but overall, I am pretty happy with this suite at my org

Altaro has a replication model that doesn't work well for DR. If you have subnet a and subnet b both segmented and seperated by WAN VPN, do not expect this to be a viable DR solution. YES, it does allow you to restore from VM (boot from VM) in the second backed-up subnet, but if that subnet is different to the VMs original subnet, those machines will not talk. Networking 101. There needs to be a mechanism to restore VMs in a DR site predictably and immediately without this limitation. I think I read that Altaro is introducing a functionality change for DR in the coming release that addresses this and I have enquired as to specs. Right now, my option is to backup to my local NAS, commit a second backup to segment 2 NAS for resiliency and incase of fire or disaster and recover. Slow venture but at least there is copies offsite and available. Customer service experience has ranged from friendly to cocky responses - and they like to throw KB articles at you instead of taking the time to explain what and why's (like every novice user must know the product as good as they know it)

Started using the product in 2015 with basic windows server 2008 Hyper-V back-up for free trial and was quite surprised about quality and functionality. Since then been using in various environments (1000+ VMs) and amount of progress from old versions to the new is significant. I could see how much effort and expertise goes into the product and how it is trying to be on the cutting edge of backup technology.

The upgrade process from old to new version is not as seamless as I wanted it to be, especially with licence.

Reliable and well supported

Yorumlar: Reliable product that we have used to recover data within expected timeframes and under pressure. Always test your restore functionality to make sure it works... and this one does.

Artılar:

Restoring VM's and also Microsoft 365 Data is granular and easy. The single dashboard for both products makes it easy for our engineers to use.

Yorumlar: So far had to use only once from disaster recovery, didn't restore but used to recover data from Exchange and folders to newer software install - made life a lot easier

Clients are never to be trusted to do what is asked so having the ability to know the basics have been done helps a lot

This fit the bill fairly well and was pretty easy to use. It was overall flexible enough to allow us to backup direct to our NAS's and restore files fairly easy. If you are looking for a lower cost solution that can do a good job backing up VM's I would give Altaro a hard look. If you need it for a lot of small sites I would look at their central console though.

We purchased approximately 25 copies and used them at all of our remotes and at the initial purchase they had no way to manage them all via a central console. This has since changed but last I checked it adds a nice bit to the cost if you want it as an addon. Some of their scheduling screens cab be a bit weird to figure out.
